Learning through play

At Camperdown Nursery, we believe that play is fundamental to children’s learning, development, and overall wellbeing. It supports not only their ability to learn, but also their health, happiness, and confidence.

Our nursery environment is bright, welcoming, and stimulating, with plenty of space for children to explore, investigate, and discover. We are proud to offer a play-based approach that supports children’s wellbeing, helping them feel Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible, and Included.  Our skilled practitioners guide learning through rich, playful, hands-on experiences, following each child’s interests and stage of development.

We view the outdoor environment as an extension of the indoor space and operate a free-flow approach, allowing children to move freely between indoors and outdoors throughout the day, in all weathers (except during meals and snacks). This flexibility encourages independence, choice, and active engagement with the world around them.

Our whole environment is carefully designed to promote inclusion, offering a wide range of experiences that support every child to thrive.

Our approach to learning

At Camperdown Nursery, we follow a child-led approach to planning, rooted in the principles of Curriculum for Excellence (for children aged 3–5 years) and Realising the Ambition (for children aged 2–3 years).

Our planning is shaped by each child’s interests, developmental needs, and the world around them — including seasonal changes, festivals, and current events. This ensures learning is relevant, engaging, and meaningful for every child.

We also incorporate intentional planning to support core areas of development, with a strong focus on literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing.

Our skilled practitioners observe, listen, and respond to children’s ideas, creating a rich learning environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, and confidence.

To keep families closely involved, we use online learning journals, where parents and carers can track their child’s progress, view photos and observations and share achievements and experiences from home.

This two-way communication helps build a strong connection between home and nursery, supporting each child’s learning journey in a meaningful and collaborative way.
